Reserve/production figures use the latest widely-cited data (IBM, Coal Ministry, USGS, BP/EI Statistical Review, IEA). Where a figure changes yearly, the rank/order is what matters for the exam — memorise the order, not the decimal.

PART A · DISTRIBUTION OF KEY NATURAL RESOURCES

This part maps where the world's resources sit and why their distribution is uneven — geology, climate and tectonics decide it, and that unevenness is the root cause of trade, geopolitics and conflict. The Mains syllabus explicitly adds South Asia and the Indian subcontinent, so India-specific distribution is treated as a full sub-topic (A4).

Classification of Resources

On the basis of Origin
- Biotic — derived from biosphere (forests, fish, livestock, fossil fuels as biotic origin)
- Abiotic — non-living (rocks, minerals, metals, water, land)
On the basis of Exhaustibility / Renewability
- Renewable (flow) — replenished by physical/mechanical/chemical cycles: solar, wind, water, tidal, geothermal; also "continuous" vs "biological" renewables
- Non-renewable (stock) — fixed stock, formed over geological time: coal, petroleum, natural gas, most minerals. Recyclable (metals) vs non-recyclable (fossil fuels)
On the basis of Ownership
- Individual, Community, National, International (e.g., Area/seabed beyond EEZ — "Common Heritage of Mankind")
On the basis of Status of Development
- Potential → Developed/Actual → Reserve → Stock (Zimmermann: "Resources are not, they become" — they are functional & dynamic, dependent on technology + need)

The foundational idea, due to Erich Zimmermann, is that resources are subjective, relative and functional — a "neutral stuff" becomes a resource only when human knowledge, technology and demand make it usable. Uranium was inert rock before nuclear fission; bauxite mattered little before the electrolytic smelting of aluminium. This explains why distribution of "key" resources keeps shifting (e.g., rare earths, lithium, cobalt becoming "key" with the energy transition).

Renewable but can be exhausted: groundwater, forests, soil fertility, fisheries — "renewable" ≠ "inexhaustible" if overused beyond regeneration rate.
Stock vs Reserve vs Resource: Resource = total identified + undiscovered; Reserve = portion economically extractable now; Stock = exists but lacks technology to use (e.g., H₂O as H₂ fuel).
Zimmermann's dictum: "Resources are not, they become." (functional concept).
Common Heritage of Mankind — deep seabed minerals (the "Area"), Antarctica, outer space, are governed by international regimes (ISA / UNCLOS).
